Each year, the American Society of Addiction Medicine recognizes physician members for their contributions to the field of addiction medicine, as well as to the Society itself. Each professional chosen is referred to as Distinguished Fellow of ASAM. We are thrilled to announce that Lakeside-Milam’s own Medical Director, Teresa Jackson, MD, has received this honor for 2023.
What Does It Mean to be an ASAM Distinguished Fellow?
To qualify as a Distinguished Fellow, applicants must meet stringent standards outlined by the Society. They need to have served ASAM in significant ways, made major contributions to the field of addiction medicine, and remained members for a period of at least five consecutive years. Through a demonstrated pattern of clinical excellence, advocacy, and leadership, a select few applicants may achieve DFASAM status.
Dr. Teresa Jackson, DFASAM
Dr. Jackson’s contributions to ASAM and the field of addiction medicine are numerous. When she was first featured by the organization, she outlined her goals for early intervention and stigma reduction. Today, Lakeside-Milam’s Medical Director continues to advance the public’s understanding of substance use disorder, educate physicians about referrals for treatment, and advocate for the well-being of Washingtonians struggling with addiction and homelessness. Below are just a few of her accomplishments.
- Addiction medicine certification from ABAM and ABPM.
- Served as the ASAM Region VIII director and hosting the region’s annual meeting.
- Chaired the ASAM Membership Council and enacting positive changes to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Offered outreach education to emergency department physicians, primary care providers, and hospitalists about the use of hospital-based buprenorphine and referral to addiction medicine treatment, resulting in the creation of a Suboxone bridge program.
